Editorial Note
According to biographer Howard Pollack, Copland himself transcribed the Sonata for Violin and Piano for clarinet and piano in 1980, in consultation with two clarinetists: Timothy Paradise, who had made his own transcription in the late 1970s, and Michael Webster, who ultimately gave the official premiere of Copland's transcription with Barry Snyder in March, 1986. (Barbara Lister-Sink and Webster gave a preliminary performance in 1983.) Very few changes are made besides the transposition down a major third, and adjustments to remove the simultaneous notes from the violin part. Boosey & Hawkes published it in 1988.
