Program Note

The North Star was a Samuel Goldwyn production that cost more than three million dollars and was more than a year in preparation. With an original screenplay by Lillian Hellman, the movie told the story of a Russian agricultural community before and after the Nazi invasions. Copland wrote three songs for the score on lyrics by Ira Gershwin, including Song of the Guerrillas.
